Description

Day 21 Progesterone Test

Progesterone is a hormone which is produced by the follicle after Ovulation. At this stage the follicle is called the Corpus Luteum. (Hence the name Luteal phase for this part of the cycle). 7 days after ovulation (Day 21) the level of Progesterone in your blood should be at a high level if ovulation occurred. A low level may indicate that you did not ovulate.

Who Should have a Day 21 Progesterone Test

  • Women who would like to confirm if they have ovulated.
  • Women who find Ovulation Predictor Kits difficult to use.

What is Progesterone?

Progesterone is a hormone which is produced by the ruptured follicle after Ovulation. At this stage the follicle is called the Corpus Luteum. (Hence the name Luteal phase for this part of the cycle). Progesterone prepares the lining of the uterus for implantation. If implantation occurs the level of Progesterone continues to rise. If not, the levels of Progesterone decrease and as a result the lining is shed, marking the start of a new cycle.

What will a Day 21 Progesterone Test tell me?

At the start of the cycle Progesterone is at very low levels. After Ovulation (Day 14) the levels of Progesterone gradually start to rise and peak on Day 21. If implantation and pregnancy occur the level of Progesterone will continue to increase. If not, the levels of Progesterone drop quite quickly.

The precise timing of a Day 21 Progesterone test is extremely important. If this test is not taken on the correct day of your cycle, then you may get an inaccurate result.

The Progesterone blood test should be performed 7 days post Ovulation or 7 days before the start of your next cycle.
