Pregnancy Blood Test (B-hCG)
A pregnancy blood test (Bhcg) is more sensitive than a urine test even though both tests detect the same hormone. In early pregnancy the placenta starts to release the hormone Bhcg into the blood and this is excreted through the urine. Urine pregnancy tests can be affected by the dilution of the urine sample and can often be difficult to interpret before your period is due.
A blood test will give you an exact reading of the level of Bhcg in your blood.
Who should have a Pregnancy Blood Test (B-hCG)?
- Women who would like an accurate pregnancy test that detects pregnancy hormone in blood rather than urine.
- Women who would like to perform a pregnancy test before their period is due.
- Women who find it difficult to interpret urine pregnancy tests.
What is B-hCG?
B-hCG is a hormone that is only present in your blood if you are pregnant. It is produced after the embryo has implanted in the uterus. Home pregnancy tests detect this hormone in urine however a blood test will give you an exact measurement of your B-hCG level.
In 85% of normal pregnancies, the B-hCG level will double every 48-72 hours.
What will a Pregnancy Blood Test (B-hCG) tell me?
A POSITIVE Bhcg means that you ARE pregnant.
A NEGATIVE Bhcg means that you are NOT pregnant.
In early pregnancy Bhcg levels should double every 48hrs. In general, a Blood Bhcg result over 25mIU/ml is considered POSITIVE. If you get a lower result you may still be pregnant, but a repeat test will be required in order to get an accurate result.
A normal Bhcg rise over several days before 6 weeks of the pregnancy usually indicates a viable pregnancy.
As your pregnancy progresses the Bhcg level increase starts to slow down.
When Bhcg levels reach over 7200 mIU/ml a yolk sac can usually be seen by ultrasound scan.
At a Bhcg level greater than 10,000 mIU/ml there should be a visible embryo with a heartbeat on a scan.
After 10 to 12 weeks the Bhcg levels reach a plateau for the duration of the pregnancy.

How it works
The Pregnancy Blood Test is identical to the test performed by fertility clinics worldwide. Using the latest technology to analyse samples only a small blood sample is required from your fingertip. When you order the kit it will be posted to you in plain and discreet packaging with no logos or branding on the outside. Simply collect the blood sample with the kit and post it to the lab using the FREEPOST envelope. Your results will be available 2 to 3 days after the sample is received by the lab.
When to take the test.
This test can be taken as early as 5 or 6 days before you before the start of your next cycle. It can also be taken after you perform a home urine pregnancy test if you would like to know the exact level of pregnancy hormone in your blood. If you are looking for an accurate result keep the kit at home until the most appropriate day of your cycle. Perform the fingerprick blood test and post the sample back to the lab on the same day. Everything you need is included in the kit.

The female cycle is controlled by hormones. A correct hormone balance is required to achieve a pregnancy. Female Hormone blood tests monitor the levels of these hormones in your body at a specific time in your cycle to check your fertility level.
