AMH Home Test Kit

AMH (Anti Mullerian Hormone) is a hormone produced by the follicles on your ovaries. An AMH test will reveal whether the number of follicles on your ovaries is low, normal or high for your age. Follicles produce eggs, so this test reflects the number of eggs remaining in your ovaries. This test is also called an Ovarian Reserve test because it indicates the number of follicles / eggs in ‘reserve’ on your ovaries.

Who Should have an AMH test?

  • Every woman of childbearing age can have an AMH test.
  • More and more single women are opting to have their fertility level checked using the AMH test.
  • If you have been trying to get pregnant without success, then an AMH test might reveal the reason why.
  • If you are considering moving on to IVF then you should have an AMH test. This is one of the first tests that will be requested at a fertility clinic.
  • Even if you are not currently trying to conceive but you would like to know what your fertility level is, you should have an AMH test.
  • An AMH test can help you to decide whether you should start planning a family now or wait for a year or more.

What is AMH?

AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) is perhaps the single most important fertility test for women. It should be carried out if you are planning to get pregnant or if you have been trying to get pregnant without success.

At birth, every woman is born with the total amount of eggs she is ever going to have. These eggs are stored inside the ovaries in tiny sacs called antral follicles. Each month, a certain number of antral follicles start to mature and one or two reach full maturity and release an egg at Ovulation.

AMH is a hormone produced by the cells inside these antral follicles and can therefore be used as a marker to determine how many antral follicles are left in the ovaries.

Over the course of a woman’s lifetime the number of antral follicles decreases. A decrease in antral follicles means a decrease in AMH levels.

What will an AMH Blood Test tell me?

Your AMH blood test will tell you whether the number of antral follicles in your ovaries is low, high or normal for your age. This is also known as your Ovarian Reserve.

Fertility clinics use AMH levels to determine what type of treatment is most suitable for a woman.

Low AMH

If your AMH level is low for your age then you have a low number of eggs remaining in your ovaries in comparison to other women of your age. It does not tell you anything about the quality of the remaining eggs. However, research has shown that women with low AMH levels find it more difficult to get pregnant naturally or even with IVF.

Normal AMH

If your AMH level is normal it means that you have a similar number of antral follicles in your ovaries to other fertile women of your age.

 High AMH

Women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) tend to have very high levels of AMH. This is beacuse they have a high number of antral follicles. Research has also shown that some women with PCOS over-produce AMH in their antral follicles. This elevated level of AMH can often prevent the antral follicles from reaching maturity, thereby preventing ovulation from occurring.

Some women have no obvious signs or symptoms of PCOS and in many cases are only diagnosed with PCOS after an AMH blood test.
